Visiting the Birthplace of Togatta Kokeshi
A quiet hot spring resort hugged by grand mountains
togattaThe graceful figure of Mt. Zao is located on the Miyagi/Yamagata border. Togatta Hot Spring skirts the Zao, at the entrance to the Zao Echo Line. It has long been famous as a spa and is thought to be founded during the Edo period. Here, wood inns line the roads and the old hot spring town is alive. If you walk 10 minutes from Togatta Hot Spring and cross the Matsukawa River over "Kokeshi Ohashi (Kokeshi Big Bridge)", you will find "Shinchi Kokeshi-no-sato (Shinchi Kokeshi Village)" which pictures the old, plain Kiji-shi (woodworkers) village. You can see the wood artisans shaving the wood on a lathe and coloring the Kokeshi dolls.
